Prague, Czech Republic
Gargoyles were supposed to both represent evil and scare it away. They also served practical purposes, such as funneling water away from a building to keep the water from eroding the stone.
That is not what I was thinking about on that hot day in Prague as I stared up at the art adorning St. Vitus Cathedral. You see, I had seen these gargoyles before in art books, history books and power point lectures. I recognized them. But it had never even crossed my mind that I would get to meet them in person.
And so I was struck with an intense awareness of how unpredictable and wonderful life can sometimes be.
