Beijing, China

Chinese emperors would come to the Temple of Heaven to pray for a good harvest.

I went there to try to get to know China better.

China is a complex place, a place of history and modernity, of tradition and innovation, incense and iPhones.

The Temple of Heaven is a place to be reminded of Chinese history, but the bright colors and beautiful design of the buildings helped me see how China has mastered the ability to be both old and new at the same time.

Above and below: The figures on the roof of a building, or roof charms, are an important part of traditional Chinese architecture. They can represent a type of protection over the building, or a serve as a visual message to convey the owner’s status in the feudal hierarchy.
