Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City. They are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Viet Kong used them throughout the Vietnam War.
It’s one thing to learn about the Vietnam War, it’s quite another to experience even a small part of it. These tunnels are so tiny that I could barely crawl through them. The complete darkness surrounds you, you hear bats in another connecting tunnel, and you realize that if you take a wrong turn and lose your guide you could quite literally get lost…
Although they were our enemies during the war, the men who used these tunnels deserve my respect for the guts it took to go underground while bombs exploded above them. The risk of these tunnels collapsing under the heavy bombing taking place above was high. Working my way though the thick jungle, crawling through underground tunnels, and sitting in underground bunkers truly made just another event in the history books come alive!
