Melaka, Malaysia

Our afternoon in Melaka was the kind I like best: unplanned. While visiting our friends in Singapore, we piled

into their car one day and drove across the border into Malaysia. A 4 hour drive found us parking in Melaka and

spending the afternoon simply walking around the city. No tour. No Lonely Planet guide. Simply exploring with nothing

to point us in any particular direction. I love this way of traveling.

One of the sites that we stumbled upon that day was this 16th century Portuguese fort. It has been mostly destroyed, but in its

heyday it occupied a massive area and contained numerous government buildings, churches and hospitals. Of course, I

had no idea what it was when we first saw it. But it peaked my interest enough to take a few pictures…
